1974 was a special year for myself. I started the year in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and ended in Kerala, India. This is the only year I spent 365 days outside Japan. But I do not quite remember how I have spent the year, where I visited, whom I met, and so on. This is an attempt to gather my scattered memories by going through my notebooks. Remember, in 1974, we did not have internet and main means of communication were postal mail and telephone.

- May 18 - Nuclear test: Under Project Smiling Buddha, India successfully detonates its first nuclear weapon, becoming the 6th nation to do so.
- August 8 – Watergate scandal: U.S. President Richard Nixon announces his resignation (effective August 9).
- September 13 – Japanese Red Army members seize the French Embassy in The Hague, Netherlands.
- November 22 – The United Nations General Assembly grants the Palestine Liberation Organization observer status.
