晴風学舎の主文を機械翻訳させてみる ２

数年前だと、Google翻訳をつかうと、「こいつダメだー」という言葉しか出てこなかったが、近年、随分とましになった。でも、もうひと頑張り。ブラウザの翻訳機能として使われているものは、圧倒的にこのGoogle翻訳が多いのではないか。このブログの一番下にも翻訳窓を置いてあるのだけれど、これで読んだつもりになってもらっては困るというの正直なところ。

以下、Googleは【G】、DeepLは【D】、ChatGPTは【C】とする。

まず、「探究」という言葉がどのように翻訳されているか。

これは、組織のありようを表現している文脈の中で使われている。

【G】の"focus on" というのは、まあ、わかりやすい。

【D】の”centered on”というのも、気持ちはわかる。

【C】の"dedicated to"になると、なかなかという感じ。

「場」という言葉には機械翻訳も苦労したようで、

【G】は"space" 、【D】は”source of”【C】は"site"という言葉をそれぞれ選んでいる。こういうキーワードほど多義的ということでもある。

いちばん、難しかったのは「稽古」という言葉。

稽古文化学なんて言葉は、今回つくられた新造語だと思うのだが、そもそも「稽古」という言葉は難しく、というか、含意の多い単語で、”training"という単語ひとつでで代替できるものでもない。”training"であれば、"trainer"と"trainee"という役割分担が前提とされていたり、どちらかというと対面的な関係。一方、「稽古」というと、皆が同じ方向を見ているような印象。

「理」も難しそうですね。なんせ「ことわり」ですから、それに"function"という言葉を当ててしまうと機械論に逆戻りした風で身も蓋も無い。

こうやって、日本語と英語を行き来していると、翻訳しづらい部分を通して晴風学舎の特長が立ち上がってくる。「稽古」「体の理」といった言葉にどれだけ英語で肉薄できるかが、鍵になってくる。ちょっと油断すると、構築物のような英語体系に絡め取られそうになるのだけれど、ここをどう耐え、もっといえば、英語の構造そのものを変えていくくらいの気構えがないと、安易な妥協に終わってしまう。きっと、英語の古典に通じていれば、もっと重なり合う領域は増えてくるのであろうが、いかにも力不足だ。

この週末は、テキストを使った稽古もやることにしよう。

この週末、英語で稽古会をやんなきゃいけない。

秋からは稽古のために長期滞在する人もやってくる。

ちょっと自分の英語をなんとかしなきゃならない状況だ。

整体操法という単語を機械翻訳にかけたら、physical  manipulationという訳語が出てきてびっくりしたことがある。たしかに、操法の操にはあやつるという意味があるからして、manipulationという単語が選ばれても不思議ではないのだが、感応法としての操法を目指している者からすると違和感しかなかった。非操作的操法という言葉自体、字義矛盾を抱えていたということになる。

晴風学舎のWebページにいくと、最初に、晴風学舎宣言とも呼べる格調高い文章が現れる。では、これはどのように英語化されうるのか。当然のことだけど、なかなかむずかしい。まず、この文章を機械翻訳（いずれも無料版）にかけて、どのような英語が現れるかみてみよう。

Doho Internationalは、30年前、今はブラジルにいる田中敏行さん、舞踏の室野井洋子さん（故人）と僕の３人で作ったグループで、最初は「動法プロジェクト」と名乗っていた。30年前、身体教育研究所の本部稽古場で稽古していた仲間である。ただ活動実績はない。三人それぞれ、動法を媒介とした、脱国境的な活動を目論んできた。夢見てきたといった方が実態に近いかもしれない。お互いをハブにして、人の交流が細々と続いてきた。室野井さんが亡くなり、その空白を埋めるように、ここ十年、ヨーロッパでの活動が増えた渡辺恒久さんー裕之先生の英語論文の翻訳者ですーが加わり、新生Doho Internationalとなった。
